English Language Proficiency Test
Rationale
The English Language Proficiency Test is a critical assessment tool for The Mico University College, ensuring that incoming students possess the necessary reading and writing skills to excel in undergraduate teacher education degree programs, where effective communication and literacy skills are paramount for future educators to succeed in their profession and foster academic excellence among their students.
Exemptions
Applicants in the following categories are NOT required to sit the test.
- Holders of any one of the following English Language qualifications:
- Grade 1 – Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC) English A Examination
- Grade A in:
- General Certificate of Examinations (GCE) O Level English Language Examination
- GCE A/O Level General Paper Examination
- Communication 1 & 2 – College of Agriculture Science and Education (CASE)
- Grade 1 or 2 – Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) Communication Studies.
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): An overall score of 103 with scores of at least 23 in listening, 24 in reading, 28 in writing, and 28 in speaking.
- Persons who received a Grade B or above in any of the following (within the last 5 years):
- UWI English Language courses (UC010; UC10A; UC10B; UC10C; UC10D; UC10L; UC10H; UC120; FD10A; CM10A; CM10B; FD10C; FD10HFOUN1019; FOUN1012, FOUN1002, FOUN1013; FOUN1014; FOUN1015.
- Advanced Communication or Business Communication or Academic Writing 1 or 2 – University of Technology (UTECH)
- Freshman Composition I or II – Northern Caribbean University (NCU).
- Communications 1 (COMM1101) – Council of Community Colleges
- Persons who are already holders of an undergraduate degree from The Mico.
- Persons who have passed the UWI Mass Communications course ‘Media & Language’ (MC52A).
- Persons who already passed The Mico English Proficiency Test with 70 % or above.
Test Registration Procedure
Test Dates
Test for the 2024-2025 academic year will take place on the following dates:

Test Format
Part 1 – Grammar and Reading Comprehension (Multiple Choice Items)
Grammar
Candidates will respond to questions on the following topics.
- Types of Sentences
- Parts of Speech
- Types of Modifiers – Misplaced and Dangling
- Parts of a Paragraph
- Writing Mechanics and Spelling
- Idiomatic Usage (Structure or Diction)
Reading Comprehension
Candidates will read short passages and respond to multiple-choice questions on the following :
- Implied and Explicit Meaning
- Organizational/ Textual Patterns
- Literal and Figurative Meanings
- Tone, Writer’s Attitude, and Purpose
- Implied and Explicit Main Ideas
Part 1 – Writing (Candidates will be asked to complete two written tasks)
Task One
Candidates will write a 400-word, five-paragraph Expository essay on a current topic.
Task Two
Candidates will a write 250-300-word response to numerical data
Test Results Interpretation
Pass
Students who receive 70% or above in the English Language Proficiency Test
may proceed to registration for Essentials of Communication 1, the first General Education Language course.
Fail
Students who score less than 70 % in the English Language Proficiency Test will have one of two options:
- Be required to complete the gap course, Foundation English, in Semester 1 of the current academic year, once they receive and accept an admission offer.
- Be required to redo the test, if they are refused admission or if they defer the offer for the academic year of the test.
NB: If a student does not register within the academic year, the test result remains valid for five years.
