The Mico University College

Language, Literacy & Literature

The Department of Language, Literacy and Literature serves The Mico University College and beyond and commits itself to:

  • giving all students the opportunity and assistance to become efficient, articulate and competent users of the English Language.
  • facilitating students’ understanding of the language situation in Jamaica, in relation to their role as teachers of the language.
  • enhancing the development of literacy by outreach activities and collaborative ventures.
  • equipping students with the pedagogical skills relevant to the Language Arts modes of reading, writing, listening and speaking that will empower them to discharge their duties as teachers of English language and other disciplines.

The vision of the department is in keeping with the wider vision of the University College in terms of providing superior service to the community; by offering undergraduate and graduate level degrees to student teachers preparing to teach at the primary and secondary levels. The Mico University College is securing a niche in a setting that is becoming increasingly competitive. The department is aware of and is responding to new governmental policies; such is borne in mind in the preparation of teachers for the classroom.
